....today is the day to begin our journey with us...a long road filled with hope and promise of a new family member from Ethiopia. A precious child that God has already chosen waits to come home and we can't wait for her to get here!

November 2nd

November 2nd marked one year since we first saw Ayelech's face. It was the day we received our referral and saw our beautiful daughter's eyes. I remember calling Nick at work after the phone call from our caseworker and crying. We looked at her face together wondering how we could be so blessed! Happy referral anniversary to our sweet Ethiopian girl (:

Where we stayed...amazing place

How we got here...

In the early months of 2009, we felt God calling us to pursue adoption. We contacted the agency and started the paperwork required. First a pre-application, then the formal application and then the dossier (which took almost 2 months to gather).

We had to find someone locally to work with us on our home study and chose an agency with an office close by which is where we had our first meeting with them.

Why Ethiopia?

We've had a passion for Africa for years. We have a sponsored child through World Vision who is in Ethiopia and have developed a love for this country. What started as a desire to go on a mission trip turned into running the Chicago Marathon for World Vision and falling deeper in love with helping those in Africa. We are daily reminded that God doesn't call the equipped, He equips the called.

Ethiopia follows the Julian calendar, so Christmas in Ethiopia falls on January 7 instead of December 25. The word for Christmas is "Ganna" and is used interchangeably with Christmas to mean the birth of Christ (leddat). A common way to refer to the holiday is "ye ganna baal". Also, it is thought that of the Three Magi who brought gifts to the baby Jesus, the king bearing frankincense was King Balthazar of Ethiopia.
